My local comic shop uses a bouncer who evaluates everyone to see if they can enter. Oddly enough, it seems to help.

Most successful privately owned shops around here have animal “mascots”. There is a Maine Coon named Shakespeare that follows me around in the bookstore. He sleeps in the bargain bin.
